COMM 3530 Assignment: Portaits

These two shots compare the sunlight Rembrandt in black & white and in color. I don't like trying to get the lighting right with hard sunlight. It was nice light, but hard to find the shadows I needed.

These two shots compare the studio light Rembrandt in black & white and in color. I like studio lighting more, but it wasn't always easy to get the shadows in the right spot. I had Emily move around a lot. In this one, she was going for a Mona Lisa look.

These two shots compare the sunlight split in black & white and in color. Again, I didn't like sunlight. It is so unforgiving and hard to have the face in a hard half and half light with the line down the middle.

These two shots compare the studio light split in black & white and in color. I didn't feel like I got the spit to show up very well, but it didn't turn out horrible either.

These two shots compare the sunlight glamour light in black & white and in color. I think I prefer the glamour look to the other two styles. Maybe because its easier to get even light on the face or maybe because the face seems to be more even.

These two shots compare the studio glamour light in black & white and in color. I like this kind of lighting the most, if you move around and get right up on the light, you can get some really creepy looking shadows on the face. But lighting the face evenly makes the subject look like a model, hence the name glamour lighting I assume.

As for being the subject. I didn't like being in front of the camera before starting the film program at Dixie. The more projects I got involved in, I had to get in front to act, so I got used to it and it doesn't bother me like it once did. I'm willing to try just about anything for the camera these days, but the operator has to be quick, because I seem to only want to pose for a few seconds.

COMM 3530: Hard News 3

Life Flight landed on Hilton Drive today to pick up an injured construction worker at the Stephen Wade dealership. I asked my wife to bring my Nikon D5100, but she couldn't so I used what I had in hand, my cell phone. Not too bad if I do say so myself.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a shot with the construction site in the background. Below is the closest I got to that shot.

COMM 3530 - Non-Portraits

These are a few of my favorite pics from today that are not like the portraits we were shooting. I liked getting behind the scenes and catching the jockeying for position around the models. It was pretty interesting.

COMM 3530 - Assignment: Feature News 2

This weekend at Town Square, there was an event rewarding children that read a certain amount of pages for a reading competition held by the Washington County Library System. At the event there were bounce houses, pizza and a science show. We didn't know about the reading portion of the event, but library patrons were welcome. So we took our son and had some weekend fun.

Unsure of the amount of children in the bounce house.

COMM 3530 Assignment: Tight

Shooting tight is great when you want to get in close to something or someone that is far away. You can really get away with a lot, because most people don't notice you when you are that far away. I also like how you can crop things in a tight shot, so they really look cramped.

But what I don't like is that the frame is limited in what you can see. Sometimes I found that I wanted to zoom out to see more of the frame for a better composition, but I had to force myself to use the limited 200mm and 300mm view on the lenses I was using. So in many cases I was moving around all over the place to get the frame I wanted.

Lenses Used:
Tamron XR Di 2, AF 18-200mm, F3.5-6.3
Nikon Nikkor DX, AF 55-300mm, F4.5-5.6

I also noticed that when I was outside, there was plenty of light for the lens. But when I was shooting inside the Jennings Building, there was not enough light and I had to push the ISO in some cases to 3200 or 6400 to get the shot I wanted because I didn't have a tripod with me.

Here is my take.

COMM 3530: Phun with Photoshop!

I've always liked playing around with Photoshop. I've even made many of my friends into superheros using production stills from movies like Spider-man or Superman, and just placing their heads on the bodies. But I've only recently started playing around with the photo manipulation options where you an adjust saturation and color balance. So I took a photo this morning while scouting for a film location.

I noticed that the sage brush had a slight purple hue to it, but the photo I took didn't live up the way my eyes perceived the color. So I wanted to see that color more and took it into Photoshop.

I know it might look a little over saturated or even alien, but I really like the blue in the sky and clouds, and the purple in the sage brush contrasted with the extreme yellow in the grass on the hills.
